Winterfest – February 4th and 5th

The City of Barrie’s 23rd annual Winterfest & Festival of Ice is this weekend, February 4th & 5th.  Named one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario, Winterfest celebrates the season with outdoor fun for all ages in Heritage Park and Memorial Square from 10:00am to 5:00pm.   Amazing outdoor activities include horse-drawn wagon rides, snow slide, helicopter rides, midway, lumberjack shows, ice maze, and so much more.  The Festival of Ice features spectacular three hundred pound blocks of ice carved into beautiful ice sculptures – this year’s theme is Frozen in Time.  Check out the sculptures at night with a special showing on Saturday evening.

New this year – Memorial Square will be filled with the sounds of live entertainment.  Daytime will feature a variety of family programming in English and French.  A very special Saturday evening concert from 5:00pm to 9:00pm will feature headliner Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, known as USS, and a line-up of amazing local artists including Brittney Fulton, Dead Mechanics, MAPS and Swaying Tuesdays.  The Winterfest stage and entertainment have been made possible by funding provided by the Government of Ontario’s Celebrate Ontario program.

Other weekend activities not to be missed:

·         City Aquatics and Fire & Emergency Services host Barrie’s great Polar Bear Swim on Sunday, 12:00pm at Centennial Beach.  No pre-registration required – just show up ready to take the plunge!  Spectators welcome.

·         Start your weekend at the 20th annual Winterfest Pancake Breakfast at Central United Church.

·         Go skating for only $1 per person at many of Barrie’s arenas at designated times.

·         Stop by the Barrie Farmers’ Market, Barrie Public Library, MacLaren Art Centre, Grey & Simcoe Foresters Regimental Museum, and many more downtown locations for fun activities to get you out of the cold.

·         Enjoy other great events throughout the weekend, including the February Blues Festival, Easter Seals Chili Fest, Soup’s On! for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the Reel Stories weekend film festival.

Save the Date for Arts Day on Parliament Hill 2012!
The Canadian Arts Coalition is planning our third annual Arts Day on Parliament Hill for Tuesday, October 23, 2012 – and we’d like you to mark it on your calendars NOW.

Once again in 2012, we welcome artists, board members of arts organizations and arts managers to make the trip to the nation’s capital to present the Coalition’s messages to MPs, senators and senior officials.  We seek people who can speak convincingly about the value that the arts bring to Canadian communities, and the role that federal investment plays.  And we want to demonstrate strong national support by having spokespeople from all regions of the country and a diversity of language and artistic practice.

Join us on October 23 in Ottawa!

A full report on Arts Day 2011 has been posted on our website, and you can find it here:

Culture Days 2011 Stories

Many of you have responded to the call for Culture Days stories and have sent in details of your experience.

Check out the Culture Days blog to read this story submitted by Margaret Ayad, board member of The Bay Roberts Cultural Foundation, who documents some of the Culture Days activities which took place in Newfoundland and Labrador this year in her story: “Fairies and Far Away Places”:

  Here’s an excerpt:
“To understand what Culture Days means to our small, town, you need to be aware of the unique cultural heritage in Newfoundland and Labrador. For at least 400 years, Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans have been living on this island and in the case of Labrador, along an isolated coast. Traditions are strong. Remember, Newfoundland and Labrador did not join Canada until 1949. We have much to preserve and share. One aspect of our cultural heritage that is unique in the Canadian experience is our fairy stories.” Read more…

Did you have a memorable Culture Days experience? Want to share your story? Send it, along with any photos you may have, in to stories[at]culturedays[dot]ca and yours could be included in upcoming newsletters and/or blog posts! Check out this blog post for some ideas on how to go about writing your story!
